International Day of Persons with Disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is not just another date on the calendar; it is a powerful message to all of us. A message that says people with disabilities have rights just like anyone else, and they have abilities and talents that can change the world if given the opportunity and support.
In Sudan, as in other parts of the world, many people with disabilities face significant challenges — from difficulty accessing basic services to education, employment, and even community inclusion. These challenges don’t stem from their disabilities themselves but from the barriers in society and the environment around them.
This day is an opportunity for us to rethink outdated concepts and build an inclusive society that respects diversity and recognizes it as a strength, not a weakness. Let us see disability as a natural part of humanity and work on removing barriers in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
People with disabilities don’t need pity; they need empowerment. They need doors opened for them, opportunities provided, and encouragement to be part of decision-making and implementation.
Let us, today and every day, stand together to make a real difference.
“There is no disabled person, but rather a disabling society.”
“Even if you live with a disability, it doesn’t make you disabled [in any other way]. It gives you insight. It gives you knowledge. It gives you something an able-bodied person will never learn.”
